Though she was never crowned with an "American Idol" award, Kellie Pickler was one of the most popular alumni from the show. Kellie Pickler was born 28 June 1986 to Cynthia Morton Pickler and Clyde Raymond Pickler at Stanly Memorial Hospital Albemarle. She was just sixteen when she fell pregnant with her. Pickler was a troubled child due to her addiction to drugs and alcohol dependency, as her mother left her when she was age two. Morton took Pickler's custody for two years. Pickler said that things were not going well. "I recall my mother and I were together living in the same room, and I told her "I'd rather be dead than together with you. I wish God would remove me.' She took out a knife put it on the countertop, and I was told, "Here, you do it." It was fourth grade. It's true that I would never be able to take it into consideration however it has caused quite a bit of emotional trauma," she said. Pickler was eventually given to her grandparents by the court once she was 12. Morton failed to appear for the hearing. Pickler was brought up with her mother and grandmother throughout her life. Pickler cites them as having the greatest influence throughout her life. Grandmother Faye Pickler died from lung cancer in January 2002 and her children were raised by the grandfather. Pickler graduated from North Stanly High School in New London, North Carolina.
